Three Art Exhibitions on display at South Suburban College

10/28/2009

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL - The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is currently showcasing three art exhibitions in galleries on the main campus.

First, direct from South Holland, The Netherlands, to South Holland, Illinois, "broei-kas (greenhouse)" is a solo exhibition on display in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery by Northeast Ohio artist, Tom Hubbard. This body of mixed media work was inspired by the discovery of a derelict greenhouse in the town of Voorschoten, The Netherlands where Hubbard used to reside.

Hubbard holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Indiana University. His work blurs the lines between the disciplines of design, photography and ceramics in which he is trained. He has exhibited his work in the Midwest, New England, Washington D.C. and most recently Den Haag and Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The exhibition will conclude with a closing reception on Wednesday, November 18th at 12:30 p.m.

A second exhibition by Chicago artist, Allison Svoboda is on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery titled "Centering." Svoboda's solo exhibit is a collection of ink paintings. She traveled extensively through Asia as an ethnographic art dealer throughout the 90's and is heavily influenced by iconography of primitive cultures. Working in ink on paper or silk, the images reflect a deep connection to nature. From topography to the close inspection of the detailed patterns of organic life inform her work.

Svoboda has an B.S. in Environmental Design from Purdue University with a minor in Fine Arts. She has done Post Baccalaureate work with Barbara Cooper at the Art Institute of Chicago. Allison teaches at Lill Street Art Center in Chicago. She has shown in numerous galleries in Chicago and exhibited in Art Chicago for the past two years. Svoboda's exhibit will close with a reception on Thursday, November 19th at 12 noon.

A third exhibit, "Nomads y El Muerto," is on display in the Photo Four Gallery at SSC. Noted American photographer/writer, John Sevigny, presents eighteen of his recent series of photographs showing his own journeys through life and death, both rendered as dark places in his photographs, implying a powerful connection between the two. Through his glass we join him on his journey to enjoy the pleasurable or unnerving company of strangers, dreamlike and sometimes bizarre scenes of the unfamiliar, and the sensual delights of our earthly existence on the way to finding the depths of humanity and our place within.

This exhibition is sponsored in part by Centro de la Imagen, of Mexico City, as part of the country's national "fotoseptiembre" celebration taking place in museums, galleries and art centers throughout Mexico. Sevigny will also be conducting photographic workshops in September in Xalapa. His exhibit at SSC will close with a reception on Thursday, November 19th at 1:30 p.m.

The Art & Design Department is located on the fourth floor, northeast section of the main building in South Holland. The Dorothea Thiel and Photo-Four Galleries are both located within the Art and Design complex on the fourth floor while the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery is conveniently located on the first floor near the Atrium. The galleries are supported in part by the South Suburban College Foundation.

The public is cordially invited to attend the exhibitions and the artist receptions at no charge. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. " 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. " 8:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. " 3:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays.
